In for village hopping in Samos? One of Greece’s most culturally rich and green islands is also home to a wealth of villages. Whether you explore the coast or wine-growing foothills, prepare for an experience overflowing with authenticity.

Attracted by countless beaches and seduced by the colour of the pine forests, visitors to Samos can’t help falling in love with the island known as the birthplace of Hera, the wife of Zeus. But if you want a lasting relationship, where you can say you’ve looked into Samos’ soul, there’s only one thing for it: head to the villages.

There are villages throughout Samos that capture all the authenticity of this famous North Aegean isle. Cosmopolitan by the coast and tranquil in the hills, the feeling is never short of captivating – sleepy little fishing ports and village squares, local architecture and traditions, vineyards that produce the grapes for Samos’ world-famous dessert wine, and even beaches for a cheeky swim.

And with so much greenery surrounding you, you’ll want to explore the hiking paths from the villages, taking you past monuments and waterfalls. Or you could just find yourself a taverna and lose your heart to Samos that way.

There are around 30 villages to choose from, but we’ve chosen two routes – one coastal and one in the hills that capture everything wonderful about Samos.

Coastal villages of Samos

Kokkari

From Vathi, the port and main town of Samos, head along the coastal road to Kokkari. Colourful, quaint, cute… and one of Samos’ hidden gems. The cafes and brightly painted fishing boats in the little harbour are the finishing touches to this picture-perfect village. Have breakfast here, sampling the local products, and then wander around streets lined with picturesque houses. There are footpaths into the surrounding greenery. And before you move on, have a quick swim from the Mikra Lemonakia beach right by the village.

Pythagorio

Perhaps bigger than a village but also more intimate than a town, Pythagorio is Samos’ most important settlement. The birthplace of Pythagoras, it was the island’s original 5th-century BC settlement and is, in its entirety, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take your time to wander around the harbour and paved alleyways. And don’t leave without visiting at least some of the cultural sites here or nearby: the ancient Polycratian Walls and Logothetis Tower, the Archaeological Museum and the astonishing Tunnel of Eupalinos (the landmark underground 6th-century BC aqueduct) and Heraion archaeological site, with its temple to the goddess Hera – jointly a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Posidonio

A change of mood for the final stop: The little fishing village of Posidonio, on the southeast coast, is about pure tranquillity. This is the perfect spot for a seaside taverna and a long glass of ouzo, or perhaps an afternoon swim at the secluded, sandy beach. In the evening, take a walk to the little church of Agios Nikolaos, where there are panoramic views of the village and the sunsets are magical.

Mountain villages of Samos

Ambelos

Taking its name from the Greek for vine, Ambelos is your introduction to wine-growing Samos. It is around 300m up Mt Karvouni (one of Samos’ two mountains) and is full of picturesque streets and well-maintained houses, typical of Samian architecture. You’ll be tempted by the tavernas, some with great views of the Aegean, with classic Greek dishes made unforgettable by local flavours. And, of course, a glass or two of local wine. There’s a hiking trail from the parking lot through pine trees and olive groves to impressive waterfalls and caves just half an hour away.

Manolates

Staying in the foothills of Mt Karvouni is another village overlooking the Aegean, surrounded by vineyards and greenery. With old stone houses, cobblestone streets, atmospheric tavernas, Manolates is another example of traditional Samos. The highlights are the pottery and loom weaving workshops where you can witness the traditional crafts being made, although most villagers are involved in vine-growing. It is car-free and from here there are numerous well-signposted hiking trails into the Aidonia Valley.

Vourliotes

A 16th-century village surrounded by tall pine trees, olive groves and vineyards. From 360m up, the sea views are spectacular – as are the vineyards growing the muscat grape and the many nearby streams. You should seek out the spring of Pnaka and the monastery of Panagia Vrontas, a short distance away, believed to be the oldest on Samos. The restored houses and local products will stay in your memory, as will the wine. The figs, citrus and cherries, are excellent when in season.

Mytilinei

A little further south is semi-mountainous Mytilinei (or Mytilinii), built amphitheatrically within a valley. It is one of the largest and most atmospheric villages of Samos, with cafes, shops and tavernas around a main square. There is a very good Natural History Museum of the Aegean but where Mytilinei stands out is for its six churches and handful of other chapels. There’s a bonus in the summer of an outdoor cinema.

Marathokampos

Heading west, into the foothills of Mt Kerkis is Marathokampos, the village that carries the name of the bay known for its many beaches. Another hillside village with paved streets, stone houses, springs and churches, Marathokampos appears to have stood still in time. Near the village are the caves of Sarantaskaliotissa (named after the 40 steps leading to the cave in which there is a church) and Pythagoras (where the great mathematician is said to have fled to escape the tyrant Polycrates).

› Coastal villages of Samos: By car or taxi from Vathi, Kokkari is 10.4km (16mins) away. Pythagorio is 20km (30 mins) to the south and, from here, Posidonia is 18km (30mins) to the east.

› Mountain villages of Samos:

Ampelos is 24km (30mins) by car or taxi from Vathi and 15km (22mins) from Karlovasi. From here, the distances between villages are 6km (15mins) to Manolates, 10km (20mins) to Vourliotes, 10km (20mins) to Mytilinei and 33km (50mins) to Marathokampos.

There are bus routes connecting the villages with Vathi and Karlovasi, but this way you will only be able to visit one village per day.

From the airport
To Vathi:
• By car or taxi: 14 km (20′)
• By bus

Just off the South Coast of Samos, the islet of Samiopoula offers authenticity and escape in big measure.

As its name suggests, Samiopoula (little Samos) does things in miniature. Prepare yourself for a couple of tiny beaches and churches, a smattering of goats… and a giant-sized feeling of escape.

Less than a nautical mile off the south coast of Samos, Samiopoula can be easily reached on a traditional wooden kaiki. It’s a short crossing but long enough to be regaled by the captain’s stories. If you’re lucky, he might even cook up a quick snack.

Samiopoula by Boat – must try

The main beach, Psalida, is a sheltered bay of 50m of fine white sand and tranquil sea, with a small number of umbrellas and virtually nothing else.

From here you can climb a small hill and explore an island of just 2.15km by 700m, mostly covered in shrubs. You’ll find a few buildings, among them the chapels of Agia Pelagia and the Ascension of Christ, and another, even smaller beach in the small, protected bay of Katsakas, where sailing boats often anchor.

There’s also a wonderful view of Samos from where the boat drops you off. Mostly, though, a day trip here is about shutting your eyes and enjoying the rare feeling of escape.

Looking for a comprehensive travel guide to Samos? You’re in the right place!

General Information | Travel guide to Samos

The island of Samos has 32,977 inhabitants and is famous for its sweet muscat wine, “Nectar.” It covers an area of 476 km² with Vathy as its capital. This island boasts many attractions as well as beaches. Apart from the famous Pythagoras, Epicurus, and Aristarchus who were born on the island, myth has it that the goddess Hera (wife of Zeus) was also born in Samos.

Where to Go – What to See

To start off your Samos adventure right, begin from its center, Vathy. Stroll along its central coastal road and enjoy its beauty. Then, visit the Heraion, the Samos Wine Museum, and the island’s beautiful beaches (such as Tsamadou, Psili Ammos, etc.). Afterwards, visit the lovely Kokkari and the unique Pythagoreio. These two places are perhaps the reasons why we love Samos so much. Lastly, for the adventurous, a visit to the Cave of Pythagoras is highly recommended. This is where the philosopher hid while being pursued by the tyrant Polycrates. It involves an ascent of about 300 steps, but it’s worth it.

What to Eat – What to Try

The island’s tradition is not only historical but also gastronomical. Samos tables are rich, filled with flavors and aromas. Samian bourekia, traditional pies, giaprakia, seafood moussaka, and stuffed goat are some of the dishes that will fill your plates on the island. Don’t forget to try the local delicacies and, of course, taste a glass – perhaps not just one – of the traditional wine Nectar.

Access to Samos

Samos is a beautiful island in the North Aegean with a rich history and is an ideal destination for vacations. There are frequent ferry routes to Samos from Piraeus port as well as from nearby islands.

Discover the different modes of transportation providing access to Samos and choose the one that suits your needs best.

Access to Samos & information

There are various ways to reach Samos.

By ferry

There are ferries from the port of Piraeus to the two ports of the island: Vathy and Karlovassi, with frequent routes (4-6 times per week). The duration of the trip is 8-10 hours. Samos is also connected to the ports of Ikaria, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the North Aegean, and the port of Kusadasi in Turkey with daily routes.

By airplane

The island also has an airport located outside Pythagoreio. Four daily flights connect the island with Athens and two weekly flights connect it with Thessaloniki, in Northern Greece, as well as the airports of Rhodes, Chios, Mytilene, and Lemnos. The flight takes approximately half an hour to 45 minutes. During the summer months, there are also direct flights from cities abroad to serve tourists.

Local transportation

You can reach many parts of the island by KTEL buses. However, even during the summer months, the routes are not frequent enough. There are, however, several routes connecting the main towns (Vathy, Karlovassi) with the villages. To facilitate your transportation and better explore Samos, we recommend having your own means of transportation as the island has a fairly good road network.

Marinas

If you wish to approach the island with your own vessel, there are two marinas on the island. One is located in Pythagoreio and the other in Vathy. More information here: www.samosmarina.gr. [At the Pythagoreio Marina, fuel pump, drinking water, electricity, 24-hour surveillance → tel: (+30) 22730 61600. Vathy → tel: (+30) 22730 61600, 23433].

What to do in Samos. Must do exciting alternative tourism activities in Samos.

Discover what to do in Samos and enjoy a variety of activities that will thrill you and leave you with unforgettable memories.

Boat Rental

Who says you have to be a fisher to be out on a boat enjoying the Aegean Sea? There are plenty of reasons non fishers will enjoy the water and a boat just as much as fishers who enjoy casting a line.

Boat trips are just plain good for the soul. The sense of peace and tranquility that can be restored to you while gently rocking on the waves is undeniable. Although, if you need more reasons to take a boat trip, or are trying to convince someone else why a boat trip is well worth the time, look no further.

Boat trips allow you to unplug. In this digital age, we are always either sending a text message or checking our email inbox. Stress, insomnia, and depression have been connected to our inability to power down. When you head out for a boat ride, it’s the perfect excuse to unplug, even if it’s just for a few hours.

How many times have you become so consumed with work or school commitments that you neglected to set aside a day for some fun family boating? Going on a boat ride will help you keep your life in balance between work and play.

Although caving can be performed alone (although not recommended) and without physical assistance it is an activity that usually involves at least three people. The individual adventurer experiences the excursion on his or her own, but they do it near and or around a group. This setting provides companionship and emergency help if needed.

Pottery it’s an art that has existed for over 1 century in Samos…

Ceramic art is art made from ceramic materials, including clay. It may take forms including artistic pottery, tableware, tiles, figurines and other sculpture. As one of the plastic arts, ceramic art is one of the visual arts. While some ceramics are considered fine art, such as pottery or sculpture, most are considered to be decorative, industrial or applied art objects.
From antiquity, the art of pottery was developed in Samos, which reaches to the present day. In the pottery workshops in the villages of Mavratzaioi, Koumaradeοi, Myloi and Karlovasi, beautiful vases are made. The most famous vase of Samian pottery is the “Pythagorean Cup”.

According to tradition, Pythagoras made a mug, applying the laws of physics, for his students to drink wine in moderation. Internally, the mug had a line that defined how one should fill it. One drop above and the mug emptied all its wine from a hidden hole in the base. With a simple application of plumbing, Pythagoras teaches the meaning of the measure, that is, to enjoy the wine we already have in our cup, drawing the maximum benefit!

In Samos, the White Muscat grape reigns king. Also known as the Muscat blanc à petits grains in Greece it sometimes goes by the name of moschoudi.
This is a noble variety fairly popular around the Mediterranean basin and widely planted in other parts of Greece, as well. However, only in Samos does it produce the fat, luscious wines for which the island is known.

The White Muscat grape covers about 98% of Samos’ vineyards. The remaining is shared by red grape varietals like Ritino, Fokiano and Avgoustiatis.

Discover Samos through walks, swims and experiences…

Here are 10 things you must do if you find yourself in Samos:

• Dive into Tsamadou. After descending the path, which yes, is steep, but yes, totally worth all the effort: Because these waters are unlike anywhere else in the Aegean!

• Grab a table at Agios Konstantinos, for seafood and meze with a sea view. Just as it should be and as it used to be.

• Hike up to Vourliotes, the quaint little village, to admire the panoramic view from the hillside it’s perched on.

• Bring bicycles for afternoon rides along the paths, passing under lush pine forests and connecting charming villages and beaches.

• Take a plunge at sunset at Megalo and Mikro Seitani, the secret beaches that aren’t exactly beaches: they’re trees, endless pine trees, leading to cliffs over the sea, whose colors bring to mind the turquoise of the Ionian.

• Bring along a book and read it in the shade of one of the tamarisk trees at Kerveli beach.

• Explore the secluded, pebbly beaches of the island, Varsamo, Kyra Gianni, Tsopela, and many more.

• Ascend the pathways to Manolates, zigzagging among whitewashed steps and flower-filled courtyards.

• Pair fresh fish and fantastic seafood with ice-cold ouzo at the port of Karlovassi.

Birthplace of the mathematician Pythagoras, philosopher Epicurus and writer Aesop, Samos has so many ways of tempting you to its shores, with gorgeous mountain and coastal villages and the island’s famous sweet wine standing out. And to that list, you can add the beaches. Lots of them. Most are framed by greenery and deep blue waters and are of all sizes and styles for families, friends and couples. You’ll find fully organised beaches (with tavernas, beach bars and water sports) or secluded gems on one of the greenest Greek islands.

So let’s get that bucket list started with 12 of the best beaches of Samos.

Beaches of Samos – in detail

Potami beach

One of the best-known beaches of Samos, Potami is surrounded by greenery and has incredibly clear water. It’s also one of the most photogenic beaches in Samos (which is saying something), with the chapel of Agios Nikolaos above it.

The view is magical, especially at sunset. Potami beach is close to Karlovasi and easy to get to and has amenities, although there is also space to feel free. It is known for its shiny pebbles and getting deeper quite quickly. Note that it can get windy.

Amenities: Sunbeds & umbrellas, beach bars.
Access: By road

Mikro and Megalo Seitani

Natura 2000-protected area around Mikro & Megalo Seitani beaches of Samos are two of the most scenic beaches in Greece. Mikro Seitani is the smaller of the two, with high rocks, emerald waters and a feeling of total seclusion. Meanwhile, at the slightly larger Megalo Seitani the wow factor is amplified by the sight of Kakoperto Gorge from the sea.

Neither beach has facilities and you’ll need to follow a 3km hiking trail starting from Potami beach to get there, so bring all the food, water and shade you’ll need. Other than that, kick back and enjoy.

Amenities: None
Access: By road & hike

Tsamadou beach

One of the most popular beaches of Samos, Tsamadou stretches out across Kokkaris bay like a mirage. The thick pine groves around the bay and green-blue waters give Tsamadou beach a tropical feel, and the small pebbles keep the water incredibly clear, making it prime snorkelling territory. There are amenities aplenty (including sunbeds, umbrellas and a beach bar) and it’s easy to get to. Just watch out for northerly winds.

Amenities: Sunbeds & umbrellas, beach bar, snack bar.
Access: By road

Kokkari beach

Visiting the little fishing village of Kokkari and its beach is a must when you want to discover the best beaches of Samos. The beauty is something else … and we’re not just referring to the beach. The little white houses spreading amphitheatrically from the village are heavenly. The waters are blue-green, with fine pebbles and crushed shells, and there’s another smaller beach next door.

There’s everything you need at Kokkari beach, including food and drinks. Note that it can get windy, making it popular with windsurfers.

Amenities: Sunbeds & umbrellas, beach bar, tavernas, restaurants, water sports, sea ramp
Access: By road

Kaladakia beach

One of the smaller beaches of Samos, Kaladakia is a gem that rewards you with some of the clearest waters. It is located within Marathokampos (a large bay in southern Samos with many beaches) and is surrounded by 3m tall rocks. The beach is made up of fine pebbles and has a rapidly descending seabed (snorkelling, ahoy). There’s also a semi-submerged cave, making for an awesome sea entrance (if you’ve got a GoPro, make sure it’s charged). It’s secluded, yet has all the necessary facilities and is easy to get to. Kaladakia is spot on.

Amenities: Sunbeds & umbrellas, beach bar, parking
Access: By road

Psili Ammos beach

Also in Marathokampos bay is Psili Ammos (meaning fine sand), one of the larger beaches of Samos. Thanks to its size, you can check into the beach bar or opt for the wilder part. But wherever you are, you’ll enjoy fine yellow sand and shallow, green-blue waters (ideal for families with kids). Psili Ammos beach is backed by a wall of pine trees that reaches the edge of the shore and offers protection from wind. Psilli Ammos is easy to get to and has plenty of amenities, including tavernas. Bingo!

Amenities: A few umbrellas & sunbeds, taverna & parking
Access: By road

Votsalakia beach

The third of our swimming spots in Marathokampos bay is Votsalakia, one of the biggest beaches of Samos, at 2.8km in length. It is covered in fine pebbles and has shallow, clear blue waters (great for kids and families) and chilled vibes. It’s one of the most popular beaches in Samos, protected from the wind and catering to one and all (especially families), as you’ll find everything here: food & drink, watersports and plenty of space.

Amenities: Sunbeds & umbrellas, beach bars, tavernas, cafes, sea ramp.
Access: By road

Livadaki beach

Boho vibes galore and activities for all. Livadaki beach is one of the most picturesque and smallest beaches of Samos. It’s is fully organised and its location deep inside a narrow fjord-like cove assures it a spot in your Instagram feed. And those shallow, turquoise waters make it a hit with the kids. Livadaki has fine sand and pebbles and is surrounded by greenery, meaning it’s a joy to explore the cove by canoe or kayak.

All that beauty and limited size mean that Livadaki beach does get busy, however, so it’s worth coming in the morning or in the late afternoon. Note that the last 2.5-3km of the journey is on a dirt road.

Amenities: Sunbeds & umbrellas, beach bar.
Access: By road

Kerveli beach

Kerveli is a secluded beach, set in a small cove close to Posidonio. There are some sunbeds and umbrellas, although the thick greenery does offer natural shade over much of the beach. It’s a family-friendly beach, with small pebbles and shallow, blue-green water that’s a joy for snorkelling. There are water sport, including a scuba diving centre, and tavernas lining the boardwalk. Getting to Karveli beach is easy. Peeling yourself away is another matter.

Amenities: A few sunbeds & umbrellas, tavernas, water sports.
Access: By road

Pythagorio beach

Named after Pythagoras, who was born on Samos, Pythagorio is the island’s longest beach (a whopping 4.5km). It’s also one of the most cosmopolitan, with beach bars, a mixture of fine pebbles and sand and with pine trees. It’s also one of the most popular beaches in Samos, Blue Flag-certified and with plenty of water sports (you can hire kayaks and pedalos, as well as waterski, wakeboard, wake-surf and take windsurf lessons). And there are boats trips to tiny Samiopoula. It’s divided by a small stream that gives way to Potokaki beach. Any way you have it, you’re in for a treat. Of of the best beaches of Samos – you must see!

Mykali beach

Mykali is another long beach (3km) and one of the most organised beaches of Samos. It boasts water sports, heaps of amenities and is close to Pythagorio. It’s backed by pine trees that almost reach the water and has shallow, blue waters and fine pebbly sand. You can forego the comforts and opt for the wild part (some of the trees offer shade) or enjoy the facilities. It’s a family-friendly beach and is easy to get to.

Mikri Lakka is perfect for a fun day out in the sun. It’s one of the smaller and most secluded beaches of Samos, protected from the wind and with fine pebbles and shells and calm blue waters. It is steeped in pine groves that almost reach the sea, giving an exotic air. You can reach Mikri Lakka beach by boat or a 10min walk from Mourtia beach (it’s not the easiest road to negotiate by car). Note there are no amenities.
