General Information | Travel guide to Samos
The island of Samos has 32,977 inhabitants and is famous for its sweet muscat wine, “Nectar.” It covers an area of 476 km² with Vathy as its capital. This island boasts many attractions as well as beaches. Apart from the famous Pythagoras, Epicurus, and Aristarchus who were born on the island, myth has it that the goddess Hera (wife of Zeus) was also born in Samos.

Where to Go – What to See
To start off your Samos adventure right, begin from its center, Vathy. Stroll along its central coastal road and enjoy its beauty. Then, visit the Heraion, the Samos Wine Museum, and the island’s beautiful beaches (such as Tsamadou, Psili Ammos, etc.). Afterwards, visit the lovely Kokkari and the unique Pythagoreio. These two places are perhaps the reasons why we love Samos so much. Lastly, for the adventurous, a visit to the Cave of Pythagoras is highly recommended. This is where the philosopher hid while being pursued by the tyrant Polycrates. It involves an ascent of about 300 steps, but it’s worth it.

What to Eat – What to Try
The island’s tradition is not only historical but also gastronomical. Samos tables are rich, filled with flavors and aromas. Samian bourekia, traditional pies, giaprakia, seafood moussaka, and stuffed goat are some of the dishes that will fill your plates on the island. Don’t forget to try the local delicacies and, of course, taste a glass – perhaps not just one – of the traditional wine Nectar.
